SPAR JOINS AS SPONSOR TO THE “GRAN CANARIA MARATHON 2012”
The Department of Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the SPAR chain of food stores have signed an agreement this week through which the latter guarantees, one more year, its support to the celebration of the Gran Canaria Marathon.
The logo of this sponsor will be present on the race T-shirts of runners, besides posters and signs all along the course but, what this agreement mainly guarantees is the support of the chain of food stores to an initiative linked to the world of sports in the island.
It is not the first edition of the Gran Canaria Marathon to be supported by SPAR, “as the company considers the promotion of healthy lifestyles inherent with the objectives of a food company like ours, compromised and concerned with Grancanarian society”, pointed out José López Peñate, Vicepresident of Cencosu Group.
As far as the Councilor of Sports, Lucas Bravo de Laguna, is concerned, he thanked the persons in charge of SPAR for “their courage in a moment when financing resources suffer constant cuts and, as a consequence, sports sponsoring becomes diminished”, and encourages them to go on giving their support to ambitious
initiatives that place Gran Canaria on the international stage, as it is the case with the Gran Canaria Marathon 2012 and parallel events celebrated around it.
LA GRAN CANARIA MARATÓN 2012 TENDRÁ SU CARA MÁS SOLIDARIA EN LA CARRERA “FIRGAS DE CORAZÓN”
The Councilor of Sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Lucas Bravo de Laguna, the Sales and Marketing Manager of Agua de Firgas, Ana Belén Quintana, the Secretary of the Canarian Society of Cardiology, Dolores Romero, the Vice-president of the Canarian Society of Family Medicine, María Teresa Martínez, y Lola Cordero, Representative of the Theodora Foundation, attended today the opening ceremony of the “Race for Solidarity, Firgas from the Heart”, which will take place next January 21, within the Events of the Gran Canaria Marathon 2012.
The purpose of this event is twofold. On one hand, to continue with the task of encouraging the Grancanarians to practice some physical activity, always within their limits of age and physical condition, and on the other hand, to cooperate with the Theodora Foundation, in their work of support to hospitalized children.
The event, expected by Lucas Bravo de Laguna to enrol around 2.000 persons, “as it is a matter, above all, of participating, even at a walking pace”, will allow free registration through the website www.grancanariamaraton.com. It will also provide with a fundraising box, at the beginning of the course, where every contestant or spectator, will have the opportunity to make a contribution to the Theodora Foundation, receiving in exchange the traditional “red nose” of the Smile Doctors who work in this organization.
The race, beginning in Venegas Street and following northwards, along Dr. Waskman, León y Castillo, Triana, Lentini, GC-110, Lentini, Triana streets, Muelle Las Palmas and back to Venegas Street, will cover a route of 3 kilometers approximately, throughout a wholly flat course, which will make it possible for any citizen to carry it out.
During the presentation of this Race for Solidarity, the representatives of the Canarian Society of Cardiology and the Canarian Society of Family Medicine agreed about the importance of physical exercise as a way of fighting against cardiovascular risk factors.
They reminded us that sedentary persons walk, on a daily basis, between 4.000 and 6.000 steps a day and, with a little further effort, reaching the 10.000 steps, they could prevent health problems such as diabetes or the so dreaded coronary heart disease, “and those 10.000 steps require only 15 minutes on average”.
The Secretary of the Society of Cardiology commented on the fact that the Canary Islands has become the Autonomous Community with the highest rate of cardiopathies, and consequently with the highest risk of death. In this respect, “even though we are at present within the average range, mostly due to the support from primary health care, there is still plenty of work to do in this field and others such as the fight against childhood obesity”
In order to continue working on this task, within the framework of the “Race for Solidarity, Firgas from the Heart”, doctors from the Canarian Society of Cardiology will be available to participants and, besides clearing up any doubts about heart trouble, they will measure the blood pressure of any person that might be interested. After the race, talks about healthy lifestyle habits and physical exercise will be given.
