Following the success of its first marathon in 2010, Gran Canaria will host the fifth edition of Gran Canaria Maratón, in January 2014. Las Palmas will join the many other capital cities throughout the world which host marathons, attracting some the world’s top athletes.
While the rest of Europe freezes this January, Gran Canaria offers athletes the chance to run in spring like conditions; making this new sporting event a major highlight of the international running calendar this winter.
We have focused our attention on designing a perfect course that combines sport with the promotion of tourism. Therefore athletes can expect to run fast times while passing through some of the most attractive areas of our city, including the beach front at Las Canteras and our historic ‘old town’.
Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, San Sebastián, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia are some of the Spanish cities which are already host major international marathons, attracting people from all over the world. It is hoped that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will follow suit and soon be another not-to-be-missed date for the world’s top long distance runners.
The Cabildo and the Ayuntamiento (town hall) of Las Palmas have the common vision that the starter’s gun signalling the start of the race will further secure the Gran Canaria Marathon as one of Europe’s most important marathons this winter.
